Weekly Wednesday Snap | Jet Boat Ride

Hi World!

Don't know what a Weekly Wednesday Snap is? Click HERE.

Today we have what is not quite another beach post, but another waterside adventure! On Saturday, me and my family celebrated my cousin's 25th birthday. In the afternoon, we went on the Patriot Jet Boat (above) and took a tour of sorts around San Diego Bay.

We were warned that we'd probably get wet, so here's me and a couple of my cousins rockin' some ponchos. It's a good look, I think. The highest fashion. However, those hoods were pointless during the ride because at the high speeds that the boat was traveling at, the wind was pretty powerful, Also, I did take my sunglasses off before we left shore. The crew members said that sunnies were the item most often lost at sea during these rides as the winds are strong enough to fling them off of your face. The captain drove the boat at thrilling speeds and went on twists and turns, spinning here and there. It was a fun time, like a oceanic roller coaster! If you're someone who loves taking pictures when you're out doing something, rest assured, there are stops before, during, and after the boat ride where the crew members offer to take your pictures for you. Selfies are welcomed too.

I had a great time on the boat last weekend and I'd recommend it just to have a little fun if you're ever in downtown San Diego. For more info on the boat ride, you can click HERE.

How was your weekend?

#worldjump

Hi World!

If you've been following Finn Harries for the past couple years, then you're probably aware of his collaboration, World Jump, that he started in 2014. In his Instagram post, he asked people to do the following: "Upload a picture of yourself jumping somewhere you love and tag it #worldjump... Try and keep the jump as similar as possible to this one."

Here are three of my favorite #worldjump posts:

A classic #worldjump. (Source)
Much art. (Source)
V dramatic. I love it. (Source)

In 2014, I took three #worldjump pictures and posted them on Instagram. They may not be as cool as Mr. Harries' jumps, but I think they're still cool.

See it HERE.

This first one was taken by a hedge near my house.

Find it HERE.

This one was taken in the mountains, specifically on the golf course at Barona Resort & Casino.

Check it out HERE.

Arguably my favorite (and everyone else's - this post is my most liked as of today), this is my third and latest #worldjump contribution. I like that it looks like I'm walking on the mountains. This was taken when I went on a family hike up to Mt. Woodson. You might have heard of "Potato Chip Rock," which was right next to me. I don't think I was willing to jump on the potato chip and risk dying to take a picture, but I did venture atop the chip!

Lemme tell you, if you do decide to participate in this collaboration, your first one might take 156168616186 tries, unless you're just that good. Okay maybe not that many tries, but I consider myself a bit of a perfectionist sometimes.

Here are three tips I have when taking these pictures:
  1. Find a friend with photography skills you trust to take your picture. This way, you'll feel more comfortable having the picture taken. You'll probably be more likely to love the final product too. My brother and sister are usually my photographers when I decide to jump. Thanks, sibs!
  2. Use video or burst mode (on iPhone) to help you capture the moment. These options make it easier to take pictures of moving objects, which, in this case, is your body. If you decide take a video, you can look at it frame by frame and when you find the one you're happy with, screenshot it. With burst mode, you can simply look through the pictures that were taken until you find the one you like the most.
  3. Don't be afraid to use photo editing tools to clean up and enhance your pictures a little bit. I mainly use the app, Afterlight, but I sometimes use the Instagram editing tools too. Try not to overdo it though. Most of the time I just like to fix the lighting to see my body and surroundings better, but making the colors pop a little doesn't hurt. I try to keep it as natural as possible, not making it look too perfect, but ya know, you do you. I like the subtle changes, while still making it look pretty.
I haven't taken a successful #worldjump picture in years, but I hope to do a lot of traveling in the future or just go on random adventures around town where I can take more. I'd definitely like to do more jumping because it's a lot of fun for me, but until then, here are the three I have. Mr. Harries originally proposed that he'd make a blog post with some his favorites, but I don't think he got around to it. Oh well, he's a busy boy. I'm just happy he's still posting more #worldjump pictures on his Instagram. Check out all of his #worldjump posts and follow him HERE. He takes great pictures in general and makes awesome content with his twin brother Jack on JacksGap.

Happy jumping!

Weekly Wednesday Snap | A Windy Beach Day

Hi World!

Don't know what a Weekly Wednesday Snap is? Click HERE.

So apparently, I've been to the beach a lot lately because my last two posts (THIS and THIS), were both about beach hangs. Here's another one.

On Saturday, me and a couple of my floormate friends, plus one of their friends, went to Newport Beach for the day. This a pretty view of the beach from the boardwalk that was nearby. I really like how the waves look here. It was really windy while we were there, so my hair was fluffed up in all directions and got quite tangled. I thought it was a great look tbh. Because of the wind though, we were only on the sand by the water for a little bit. Sand flew everywhere, covering all of our stuff, and the water was cold too. Only me and my friend Brandy ended up going in the water for some wave jumping. It was chilly, but I was happy to get in the water.

Here are my four beach companions strutting on the sidewalk as we searched for a place to eat. We eventually settled on a nice cafe where we all had fish and chips, as recommended by Brandy, who had been there before. Their dipping sauce was bomb, creamy with a little kick. It complemented the fries really well. After that, we had dessert at various shops along this street. I had some yummy gelato, Brandy had a frozen banana, and my friend Crystal had a donut. Sorry I forgot to take pictures of my food... I'm really good at this blogging thing. Also, I prolly just ate everything before I thought about taking some snaps. Following our waterside eats, we spent some time exploring the gorgeous Fashion Island mall, clad in beach gear. Classy as ever.

How was your weekend?

Spring Break At The Beach

Hi World!

Roughly three weeks ago, me and my friends decided to have a beach day to start off Spring Break. For two of us, it was the end of Spring Break because their schools are part of a different system than the rest of ours. Also, we wanted to have a bonfire with all of us to bid farewell to one of our friends before he left for a three week solo adventure in Europe. The day consisted of tide pool shenanigans and bonfire chats.

We started off that morning grabbing something to eat from a shopping center near our houses and buying materials for our bonfire: marshmallows, drinks, hot dogs, etc. I opted for a Rubio's fish taco and shrimp burrito. After that, we drove to La Jolla and found a nice little grass area above the beach to have a little picnic before going down to the tide pools.

Here are four of my friends on their towels under the shade of an umbrella having a lovely beachside meal. I think we all ate some delicious Rubio's.

After lunch, we headed down to the tide pools. This was some of the view as we ventured closer to the water. Isn't it pretty? It was a really nice spring day with the sun shining above us, and the water and the skies that were a beautiful blue. It almost felt like summer. Spring Break, you're such a tease.

This is a view of some of the tide pools. I had never been to tide pools before so I was excited when my friend suggested we go. Stepping on the wet moss wasn't the most pleasant experience, being quite squishy, but it was cool to see the sealife that was there. My friends brought little nets and buckets to catch some fish or crabs. We actually never ended up catching any fish, they're fast critters, but we did catch some crabs. STDs were rampant in La Jolla that day... jokes. I'm funny.

We were able to catch numerous crabs of varying sizes and named each of them. This little hermit crab was the first one we caught (by me, thank you very much *flips hair*). I believe we called him Little Jorge. Our other crabs included Felicia and Harold, among others.

Here's another one. This one was huge, aptly named Big Daddy. We found a bigger one later (but we weren't able to catch it), that we dubbed The Claw, because most of the time, all we saw of it was its large, menacing claw. That creature was terrifying. We spent at least a good half hour or so trying to catch it, but The Claw evaded us. Oh well, I'm scared to think about what it would've done had we caught it. Don't worry, before we left the tide pools, we released each and every crab and they were all still alive upon being set free.

Etched into the rocks at the tide pools were carvings of all shapes and sizes. Many of them were reminiscent of the carvings you see on trees in parks. You know, the ones with two people's initials inside a heart. Does that count as vandalism? Anywho, I just thought that they were interesting.

Here's a little snap of my friends exploring the tide pools and tracking sea critters in all of the crevices. By this time, a fifth friend joined us. Also, side note, the word "crevice" was used abundantly throughout the couple hours that we were there and lemme tell you, it brought me so much joy.

After the tide pools, we ventured to La Jolla Shores to try and find a fire pit for our bonfire. Me and and my friend Jennifer were tasked with finding a good pit. After arriving at the beaches, we decided to head down to the water first to soak our toes. The water was cold, but it felt nice to walk on the sand and just be on the beach. The sun was almost setting at the time, but still shone bright, and I took this candid picture of her as she walked towards the water.

After we located a fire pit and the rest of our "squad" joined us, we gathered in a circle with our beach chairs and towels to wait for our other friend to arrive. My friend Erin, who I've mentioned before, with her great photography skills, took this artsy picture as I stared off into the sunset. Thanks, Erin!

About an hour later, the sky turned dark, the air grew colder, and it was time to start the fire. My friend Nicole was in charge of maintaining the fire and she was adamant on keeping that flame alive. We were able to keep it going for a good couple hours. Our friend, Austin, who we were saying goodbye to (but not really, we saw him one more time before he left), had arrived by this time. He joined us as we roasted marshmallows and hot dogs. At the time though, it was still Lent, so me and Erin, who are both Catholic, couldn't eat meat. As a result, we potentially did the most rachet thing we've ever done in our whole lives. We bought frozen fish sticks before driving to the beach and stuck them on some skewers to cook 'em on the fire. Did it work? Yeah. Was it safe? Probably not. But like, I ate like 20 of them and I didn't throw up, so I'm calling it a success.

We spent a good couple hours talking at the beach, catching up and having some laughs before we left La Jolla. After that, two of us had to go home, but the majority of us continued hanging out for a few more hours before finally calling it a day. The remainder of us went to Denny's for a midnight snack (I had an Oreo milkshake) and played Exploding Kittens, which I mentioned HERE. It's a fun lil game.

All in all, it was a grand day with my friends and a nice start to Spring Break 2016. I'm really glad we were all able to see each other ('cept one) before school started again. Now, I have about five weeks left in the semester and have tons of work to do before summer break. Yay school (I love it, just not the homework).

It's probably been a while since it happened, but how was your spring break?

Weekly Wednesday Snap | Crystal Cove Field Trip

Hi World!

Don't know what a Weekly Wednesday Snap is? Click HERE.

Hope you've been having a good week so far. Last Thursday, I went on a field trip for my geology lab class to Crystal Cove. I don't think I've been on a "field trip" for school since middle school, so this was kind of exciting! It was a cloudy day with rain every now and then, so I wasn't sure if it was actually going to happen or if it was going to be rescheduled for another day. It happened. But I'm glad it did. One of my lab partners picked me up and drove me to the state park. We got there about an hour early, so we spent a good amount of time talking and it was really nice getting to know him better. I only see him during class once a week, so I've never really talked to him that much. He's a pretty cool guy. Anywho, this is a snap of the beach from atop a path that headed down to the water. I took it near the meeting place for our class. We were above the beach and had a nice view of the coast.

Here's a picture of a little sea cave that we ventured to as a class to observe the rocks that were there. We studied how after years and years of formation, some sedimentary rock underwent many processes among various conditions to form the sea cave/cliff.

Finally, we have a snap of this little waterfall that was by the beach. Here we looked at points of erosion and deposition for the sediment that existed there. You can see the trail made by the water as it travels toward the ocean.

Sorry if this was too much science for you, but I thought it was cool to go on the field trip and gain a better understanding of how some of these natural formations, like the beach and the cave, came about. I also really liked being by the beach on a cloudy day.

Have a good rest of your week!

Lent 2016 Reflection

Hi World!

Today I wanted to talk to you about my experiences during Lent 2016.

*pauses* Warning, this is probably going to be a long blog post. You've been warned. *resumes*

If you're not familiar with Lent, it's a religious season observed by Catholics where, traditionally, people give up something as a form of fasting. On special days during Lent, such as Ash Wednesday and every Friday during the duration of the season, meat is not consumed, but fish is permitted. I decided to do this for the entire 40 days of Lent. I gave up meat. So basically a Catholic's Friday during Lent was my every day for 40 days. And I survived. Haha, so it's not that serious, but it was for the most part, successful. I had always wondered if I could live a vegetarian, or rather pescatarian, lifestyle. 2016 was the year I tested it out and found that I probably could. Thank goodness that I love fish and seafood.

I have a meal plan and the cafeteria on campus is basically buffet style, so I always had a lot of choices, which helped during Lent. Lemme tell you though, I had so many grilled cheeses and veggie burgers because I couldn't eat burgers (which I missed the most) or chicken sandwiches. Also, a lot of potatoes. It wasn't bad at all. However, it was hard at times when I would eat with friends who were eating burgers, or something with meat that I wanted, like pasta with chicken. Many times, I had to eat the vegetarian or vegan option that was available, like tofu, which again, wasn't bad at all. I don't mind tofu. One time, I went to Chipotle. I usually order a chicken burrito, but seeing as I couldn't for the time being, I ordered a burrito with sofritas, Chipotle's vegan tofu "meat" option. It tasted like meat and was still delicious. I appreciated that giving up meat made me try things that I normally wouldn't because I like trying new food. While some people have a "usual" at restaurants, I try to eat something new every time, only repeating menu items every now and then.

When I told people that I gave up meat for Lent, many of them looked at me in disbelief. And when I ordered sandwiches and they found out that there was no meat in it, they felt that my meal was incomplete. I mean, it had predominantly vegetables, yes, but lotsa cheese too, so I still got protein out of it. I also got a lot of protein from eggs during breakfast. Seeing the word "vegetarian" next to the word "burrito" thrilled me. Breakfast burritos that I could eat were the highlight of my days. Some assume a vegetarian diet as a way of losing weight, but this was not the case for me. I honestly didn't feel that different during my pescatarian days. I still ate a lot like the teenage boy that I am. Granted, it was only forty days, but still.

I only broke Lent twice. But they weren't really my fault, so I'm still calling it a success for the year. The first time was when I grabbed this peanut butter and jelly sandwich, or something like that, from my cafeteria. I looked at the menu label where I grabbed it and it didn't say it had any meat in it. However, when I bit into it, I discovered that they added bacon to it. I quickly spit it out, but it was still in my mouth for a while as I chewed it. I'm more of a sausage than a bacon person anyway, so I didn't need that. The other time was when I went to a family party and there was lumpia, Filipino fried egg rolls. I asked if they had meat in them, if they were spring rolls with vegetables, and I was told that they did not contain meat. So I gladly started chomping away at an egg roll, only to find out in the middle of eating it that there was meat. I already ate half of it by the time I realized the meat was there, so I just finished that one lumpia. It was great.

What I've taken away from this is that I think that given the choice of becoming a pescatarian for life or continuing the omnivorous diet that I've always followed, I'd choose being an omnivore. I could probably be a pescatarian my whole life, but I wouldn't want to. Vegetarian or vegan diets are very different and I probably wouldn't be able to do either... but you never know... we'll see, but prolly not. I like eating meat.

Here's me reflecting on life when I was on my Easter hike. I was probably just starting at the pretty lake tbh.

As a side sacrifice or fast from something during Lent, I gave up social media. *gasps* Ridiculous to think about during this age of electronic media, but I've been doing it every year for the past couple of years during Lent. For me, this specifically means no YouTube, Snapchat, Instagram, or Twitter. To make this easier, I delete the apps from my phone to avoid temptation. It's refreshing not having to worry about constantly checking social media and keeping myself updated on what everyone is up to, but sometimes it causes a little anxiety when you feel like you're missing out on something. YouTube is the hardest because I love it and watching videos is what I do to pass the time. It was especially annoying when I was reading articles with embedded videos and I couldn't watch them. Hilariously, giving up Snapchat made my friends suffer more than I did. "Lexx, that's the only way that I communicate with you! Who else am I gunna send ugly faces to?" Text me, friends. So many of my friends, like my roommate, were furious and anxiously awaited Easter so that I could snap them back.

You might be thinking, "Lexx, but you blogged throughout Lent, with YouTube videos in the posts. Doesn't that break Lent?" Why yes, reader. Yes it does. But seeing as it's technically for school for the time being, I permitted myself to use it. Honestly, I broke the social media fast so many times though. I did good with Instagram, Twitter, and Snapchat, but I caved too many times for YouTube, especially for music. Ariana Grande and 5H released new music and you thought that I wouldn't be on that the moment they released new songs? You thought wrong. But I justify it by classifying the social media fasting as a personal sacrifice, aka not part of Lent. That would be the meat fasting.

One last reflection before I leave you. During the social media fast, I had a greater realization of how dependent I, and others around me, are on our phones. I had so much more free time during Lent because I wasn't allowed to watch YouTube videos or check social media. When checking Instagram, Twitter, and Snapchat, it's often every five minutes to no new content, but I do it anyway, to pass the time. I do that instead of homework or completing other responsibilities. When I had my friends visit me at school a while ago, we still had a great time together, but there were times when conversations died down or it became silent and all of them would reach for their phones and tap away to avoid potential awkward moments, looking down at their screens instead of talking to each other. People do this in the elevators in my dorm as well to escape the perpetual awkward feeling that exists in those transportation boxes (you know what I mean if you've ever been in an elevator). Not having as much reason to reach for my phone at the time, I observed their behaviors more. It bothers me that this is a thing, but I can't say I haven't been guilty of doing it myself. People are always on their phones. During commercials, walking to and from classes, even when driving or biking, people are on their phones (not safe, kids, don't do it, especially when on the road). I've made myself more aware of these behaviors and try not to reach for my phone as much. I also try to take more time experiencing and observing the things around me. Especially when I'm with people, I resist the urge to check my phone and try to make conversation. I like to talking to people and learning about what they've been up to.

Did you do anything for Lent this year? What are your thoughts are fasting meat and/or social media?

Thoughts | Analyzing "Lightning" by Little Mix

Hi World!

I really enjoyed talking about my Top 5 Halsey Songs last month and analyzing the content of the music. So I thought that I'd try something a little different for today's post. I wanted to analyze a song that I've recently come across, "Lightning" by British girl group, Little Mix, whom I've been obsessed with lately. This song has so many different components to it, from its initial slow start to the surprise trap/EDM beat in the chorus to the Latin chanting in the bridge.

Listen to the song here:

Let's start with the lyrics (from HERE) with who I think is singing each part:

Jesy:
I'd cross a desert and an ocean
To get away from the pain of your storm
I chased the sunlight, been running from your shadow
So that I could heal and I didn't feel

Leigh-Anne:
That zig-zag shooting through my heart
That zig-zag hit me like a dart
Electricity, electricity
Oh, this love's tearing me apart
I been running like the light from the dark
Electricity keeps on hitting me

Oh, lightning strikes twice
And it burns like ice
I wish I didn't love you again
Lightning strikes twice
And it burns so nice
I wish I didn't love you,
But I do
But I do

Jade:
Those eyes, one look and I'm enchanted
Your voice a serenade, and it sings to my heart
One kiss, turned the skies to grey
I'll never get away, no shelter from the rain, oh

Perrie:
That zig-zag shooting through my heart
That zig-zag hit me like a dart
Electricity, electricity
Oh, this love's tearing me apart
I been running like the light from the dark
Electricity keeps on hitting me, oh

Leigh-Anne:
Lightning strikes twice
And it burns like ice
I wish I didn't love you again
Lightning strikes twice
And it burns so nice
I wish I didn't love you,
But I do
But I do

All:
O Fortuna
Velut luna
Statu variabilis
Semper crescis
Aut decrescis
Vita detestabilis

Jesy:
Every time that I hear your name, oh
Baby you're the pleasure, the pain, oh

Perrie:
Lightning strikes twice
And it burns like ice
I wish I didn't love you again,
But I do
But I do

All:
O Fortuna
Velut luna
Statu variabilis
Semper crescis
Aut decrescis
Vita detestabilis

But I do

The song starts with the sounds of a storm, which is the metaphorical basis for the meaning of the song. "Lightning" discusses the feelings of someone who continually goes back to a person they've had a relationship with, even though that person has caused them pain in the past. The emotions felt in the song can be compared to the chaos of a storm. The lightning can be seen to symbolize the part of the other person that they still love, or the part that attracts them and brings them back to the person that hurt them.

I found it clever and deceptive of the writers and producers of the song to start the song slowly, making it sound like a slow ballad, which it essentially still is, but as the song reaches the pre-chorus and then the edge of the chorus, increases in speed and energy. The pre-chorus, which was the part that hooked me onto the song ("that zig-zag..."), builds up to the chorus and once it reaches the "but I do," explodes in a way that is similar to lightning cracking. When I first heard this song as I previewed it on iTunes, I was shocked. Pun intended ;). I didn't expect the beat to drop the way that it did. I originally didn't like the trap, EDM, sound that they used, thinking it too cacophonous, but when I kept listening to it, I realized that it sounded harsh and discordant so as to mimic the chaos that the person might be feeling in the song and replicate the disorder of lightning. Lightning strikes in many different directions, which is what the sound recreates. I picture in my head a pinball zig-zagging all around in the machine, leaving a lightning trail like The Flash (which is a great show, btw, highly recommend) when he runs.

I like the comparison of lightning burning like ice rather than fire in the chorus. Granted, it might just be for rhyming purposes, but I've always found it odd that those opposing elements can both "burn" and inflict pain.

A note with part of "O Fortuna" written on it. Jesy Nelson posted this on Little Mix's Instagram when the girls were working on their "Get Weird" album. (Source)

One of the most interesting elements of the song is the inclusion of a fragment of the Latin poem, "O Fortuna" towards the end of "Lightning." The poem, according to Wikipedia (Yes, I'm aware this might not be the most reputable source, but this ain't no formal paper. Also, Wikipedia hasn't really failed me yet lol), is "a complaint about [the Roman goddess of fate,] Fortuna" and the "inexorable fate that rules both gods and men." The segment of the poem in "Lightning" translates as follows:

O Fortune
Like the moon
You are changeable,
Ever waxing
And waning;
Hateful life

Geez, homegirl (or homeboy) in the song must've been really screwed over by this person if she's talking about a "hateful life." Girl, you don't need that in your life. Walk away from the storm. Lightning doesn't need to strike a third time. Third time's not the charm in this scenario.

"O Fortuna," was adapted to fit music by Carl Orff, a German composer. Orff's work on the poem has apparently become very popular and is found in numerous pieces of classical music and has been used in works of popular artists such as Ozzy Osbourne and Michael Jackson. Anywho, I think the chanting of the poem adds an epic feel to the song. If the girls ever made a music video for this song, I picture them as these dark witches casting spells in a dramatic storm. I imagine them wearing fierce outfits similar to the ones they wore in the "Salute" music video. Wicked.

I just really like this song and think the different parts of the song work really well together to create a unique sound.

Well, I hope you liked this analysis of the "Lightning" by Little Mix. This is something I've never written about before. It's a new thing for me. If you'd like to see more thoughts on my favorite music, please let me know in the comments and maybe I'll do some more!

Weekly Wednesday Snap | Zumba With Mom

Hi World!

Don't know what a Weekly Wednesday Snap is? Click HERE.

On Saturday towards the end of Spring Break, my mom got me a free pass into her gym so that we could go to Zumba together. Here's a cute little mirror picture after we took the class. Sweaty, but still cute, no?

My mom has been doing Zumba, for, I think, a couple years now. At first, I thought it was funny how she would go to all of our family parties and dance it up with her sisters to memorized Zumba routines. One of my aunts was and/or is still super into Zumba too. I think she's a certified Zumba instructor. Anywho, flash forward to now, my freshman year of college, and I've basically become my mother, which isn't a bad thing. At my school, the gym gives free membership to students, so I take advantage of that to attend the drop-in Zumba classes. I don't know how to use the machines to work out and I wanted to do more than just run like I do during the summer, so I decided to try Zumba last semester for the first time. Now, I go around 3 times a week depending on my schedule. I love it. What's hilarious is the instructors know me as a regular so we're like homies now. It's fun exercise that helps me stay active and healthy. I've also figured out that I really like dancing. I love choreography and after watching Ariana Grande, Fifth Harmony, and Little Mix music videos, I want to learn all the dances. When I go to parties or events with friends and there's a dance floor, you best bet that'll I'll be there body rolling and moving my hips after the beat drops.

Have you ever tried a Zumba class?

March Favorites

Hi World!

April is here, so it's time for another favorites post! Here are some of the things I loved in March.

Artist

Little Mix

(Source)
This favorite is a bit of a surprise for me. If you know me, you know I love the girl group, Fifth Harmony. I've heard that if you like Fifth Harmony, you can't like Little Mix, and vice versa. I'm here to tell you that that statement is incorrect. Little Mix songs slayed my ears last month. I fell in love with their song, "Black Magic," a couple months ago when one of my Zumba instructors created a routine for the tune. I decided to explore the rest of their music after I bought "Black Magic" and now have a total of nine songs from them. I admit, though I think Little Mix is great now, I gotta say I'm still a bigger fan of Fifth Harmony. No shade though, these British girls can sang. Their harmonies are on point and I very much love that they sing lots of ballads. I don't get as many of those with 5H and I love me my ballads.

Song

"Secret Love Song, Pt. II" by Little Mix

Speaking of Little Mix ballads, one of them is a March favorite. This song is actually a follow up to a version of the song with Jason Derulo. Mr. Derulo makes great pop music, but I preferred the version of the song without him. Part II of "Secret Love Song" is more emotional to me and gives the girls and their voices a little more room to shine. I especially love Perrie's vocals here, clear and powerful. Part II has underlying LGBT themes, which I didn't catch until I read this article. So now I guess it's an unofficial LGBT anthem, which is cool. Anywho, I love the song, love the vocals, it's just great.

Watch Part I of the song and then Part II:

Honorable mention: "Gravity" by Sara Bareilles

I was introduced to this song, funnily enough, through another Zumba instructor, who played this during cool down. I love the lyrics. It's a beautifully written love song and it just sounds wonderful. This is some of Sara Bareilles' early released work, so homegirl's got talent. I don't know many of her songs, but I enjoy the handful of the ones I do know. She's got a good voice.

Here's the music video for it:

I don't have strong feelings for the music video, so I prefer like listening to the song on its own.

TV Show

The Real O'Neals

(Source)
I forgot how I came across this show. I think I might've seen a promo on TV or randomly clicked on it while browsing IMDb. It's about this seemingly perfect Catholic family, whose world turns upside down when the middle child comes out as gay. I think it's pretty funny and I love that they're giving young LGBT kids some more representation as they explore the character of Kenny, his coming out experience, and the gay community in general. I'm learning and laughing a lot. I also love the family. I particularly love how the older brother, played by Matt Shively, is so supportive of his little brother.

Movie

"Zootopia"

I'm sure you've heard good things about this movie because it's done really well at the box office from what I've read. I saw it with a couple floormates, not expecting much out of it, and was pleasantly surprised. I found it really interesting and liked that it tackled real problems, including prejudice and discrimination, using the predator-prey situation as a metaphor for issues such as racism. I recommend seeing it. It was a good movie. Smart, cute, and entertaining.

Here's me and two of my floormates with a Zootopia poster after we watched the movie. That lighting though.

Commercial

Walmart: Easter Surprise, Jelly Bean Surprise

This last favorite is super random. Usually, I don't really care about the commercials on TV, but this one caught my eye when it popped up while I was watching one of my shows online. I just think its really cute and I'd like to think I'd do something as adorably creative as planting a candy garden for Easter when I have kids. Well done, Walmart. Well done.

OOTD | #PapaSwag

Hi World!

Happy April! Hope everyone started off the month on a good note.

Today's post is a little OOTD, which I haven't done in a long time, mainly because I basically wear the same clothes for years before switching out a couple pieces every year or so. Anywho, on Thursday, I went to Seaport Village with two of my friends for dinner and decided that I liked my outfit enough to blog about it. I posted the above picture on my Instagram.

I was doing laundry, so most of my good jackets were being washed and I needed one to keep me warm when I went out. As a result, I ventured into my closet and found this cool jacket that belonged to my grandpa. It's a little big and it still kinda smells like him, so I guess it was like him giving me a hug when I wore it. I thought it looked good with the rest of my outfit, hence this post.

My friend, Erin, always knows how to make me look good, so naturally, I gave her the camera to snap away at my outfit.

I was feeling myself. All the smiles.

Erin's great at taking candids. I appreciate her camera work.

The outfit itself is very simple, but the jacket gives it a big pop of color with a nice plaid pattern, which I love.

Sunnies - Cotton On
Jacket - Grandpa's closet
Shirt - Old Navy
Joggers - Cotton On
Shoes (Levi's) - Ross
